www.codingcompetition.org is the website for the Young Coders competition. This includes links to register an interest and enter the competition.

Because we are a not-for-profit competition, we are not required to pay a fee to the ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office), but we adhere to the principles of the General Data Protection Regulations and understand best practice for managing information


What data we collect

The personal data we collect from you includes:

  • your name, email, postcode and address when you register your interest
  • your name, email, postcode and address when you enter the competition
  • questions, queries or feedback you leave, including your email address

Why we need your data

We collect your personal data in order to:

  • email reminders about the entry process and closing date
  • email details to you about webinars and other support services
  • email the competition results to you
  • respond to any feedback you send us, if you’ve asked us to
  • email details to you of the competition each year when the competition launches

Our legal basis for processing your data

The legal basis for processing personal data in relation to site security is our legitimate interests, and the legitimate interests of our users, in ensuring the successful running of the Young Coders Competition.


What we do with your data

The data we collect is used for the competition only and we do not share it with anyone for any other purpose. For the competition we share the data with the judges, and the schools who entered are on the STEM learning database.

We will not:

  • sell or rent your data to third parties
  • share your data with third parties for marketing purposes

How long we keep your data

We will only retain your personal data for as long as it is needed for the purposes set out in this document or for as long as the law requires us to.

We will:

  • keep your email data until you advise us you would like us to not contact you again. If you do not contact us, for example you do not enter the competition, for 6 consecutive years we may not contact you again

Children’s privacy protection

We do not intentionally collect or maintain data about anyone under the age of 13. We state that an adult must register their interest on behalf of the children.


Where your data is processed and stored

We design, build and run our systems to make sure that your data is as safe as possible at all stages, both while it’s processed and when it’s stored.

All personal data is stored in the European Economic Area (EEA).


How we protect your data and keep it secure

We are committed to doing all that we can to keep your data secure. We have set up systems and processes to prevent unauthorised access or disclosure of your data.

We do not pass on any personal data to any third parties.


Your rights

You have the right to request:

  • information about how your personal data is processed
  • a copy of that personal data
  • that anything inaccurate in your personal data is corrected immediately

You can also:

  • raise an objection about how your personal data is processed
  • request that your personal data is erased if there is no longer a justification for it
  • ask that the processing of your personal data is restricted in certain circumstances

The information collected via the “Register Interest - Young Coders Competition” (https://codingcompetition.org/register) and “Young Coders Competition Entry” (https://codingcompetition.org/submit) forms will be used for the purpose of our Young Coders competition and sharing resources.

Locations of entrants will shared with the planning committee to see the reach of the competition. By registering interest and also when submitting an entry, you are giving us permission to share the school’s name, the game and video if submitted. No children’s surnames will be included in promotional videos.

Your school name will also be shared with STEM Learning for data collection purposes.
Please note, student names are only collected to provide certificates which are sent directly to the school and are not shared with third parties.
